Ace your next tech interview: 6 tips that actually work

Great engineers still bomb interviews, usually because they under-prepare for the format, not the material. These six tips fix that.

1. Research the team, not just the company

Know what the team actually builds, what stack they use, and what problems they're solving. It shows genuine interest and gives you smarter questions to ask.

2. Think out loud

Interviewers care more about how you approach a problem than whether you get it right first try. Talk through your reasoning as you go.

3. Prepare real examples, not generic ones

Have two or three specific stories ready: a bug you tracked down, a tradeoff you made, a project you shipped. Specifics beat platitudes every time.

4. Ask how decisions get made

Questions about code review, deployment, and how the team handles disagreement tell you more about day-to-day life than any job description.

5. Don't skip the follow-up

A short thank-you note referencing something specific from the conversation keeps you memorable. Most candidates skip this step entirely.

6. Know your own non-negotiables

Salary, remote flexibility, growth path: decide what matters before you're in the room, so you can negotiate clearly once an offer is on the table.
